 The 122ndU.S. Open gets underway Thursday with the public crown taking place at one of the oldest golf courses in the United States. The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, entered the honor of hosting its fourthU.S. Open and first since Curtis Strange defeated Nick Faldo back in 1988.

 There are three at the top at the moment as Matthew NeSmith, Russell Henley and two- time major champion Collin Morikawa are at 2 under. Henley was the 54- hole leader of this veritably crown last time at Torrey Pines after commanding the first-round lead. Meanwhile, Morikawa may have tricked the entire world by saying his iron play wasn't where he wanted it to be. Easy to say for arguably to stylish iron player in the world.

 I'm officially declaring the par- 3 11th sick and not in the sense of Spieth or Ancer. Players are taking advantage of the 120- yard hole beforehand and frequently as Hideki Matsuyama just birdied it to join the early lead at 1 under.  For all the gibberish that is happed this week, what better Day 1 story could there be than a lifelong craftsperson whose son is serving as box leading after the first 18 holes?  It's been times since I chose McIlroy as my pick to win a major crown before Round 1, but we've come full circle to this moment. This is the stylish Rory has played entering a major in quite a while, and he is indeed coming off a title defense at the RBC Canadian Open. McIlroy also seems to feel like he has the game of golf on his reverse given his loyal support of the PGA Tour and the traditions of the game. McIlroy has top 10s in three of his last four majors and three straightU.S. Opens. The fact that he hasn't captured one of these coveted crowns since 2014 is stag given some of the low rounds he is shot, but he eventually seems to be back to form. maybe this indeed kick starts a alternate dominant stretch of his career.
